About this artwork
Strathearn is an area of Perthshire in central Scotland where the Lowlands meet the Highlands. In this drypoint Cameron shows the expanse of the valley of the River Earn as it curves its way from Loch Earn to the Firth of Tay. This approach to the landscape, with a wide expanse of foreground sweeping off into the barren distance, is typical of Cameron. In 1917 he was appointed a war artist and assigned the task of recording the exploits of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on the Western Front. Owing to this commission and numerous public responsibilities, Cameron did not make any more prints for six years.
