About this artwork

This is the sixth of ten prints from the ‘Belgian Set’. In this etching Cameron focuses on the 83-metre high belfry tower in the historical centre of Bruges, the capital of West Flanders. At the base of the tower he shows the booths which were set up during the great festival of Le Saint Sang held on Ascension Day every year. The highlight of the festival was a parade where a relic containing the blood of Jesus was paraded through the streets. Citizens of Bruges dress in historic Burgundian costume and re-enact the return of the Count of Flanders from the Holy Land with the precious relic. The spirituality and spectacle of this great religious event would have appealed very much to Cameron.
