One of the key early collectors of Scottish folk music, Patrick MacDonald was the minister at Kilmore in Argyll when he published ‘A Collection of Highland Vocal Airs’ in 1784. Some of the tunes from the most northerly parts of the country (originally sung in Gaelic, but published without lyrics) were collected by his brother Joseph, but the vast majority (which include songs, reels and dances) were gathered by Patrick himself on various tours. His work has been praised for the accuracy and authenticity it brings to original rhythms and performance styles, without the need for collector’s embellishments.
