About this artwork
Walton is often associated with the Symbolist movement owing to the clear influences of her friend and teacher, the Scottish Symbolist artist, John Duncan (1866-1945). While Walton visited Duncan’s studio to learn etching, the two discussed their thoughts on the French Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) . The enchantress was a central theme in Moreau’s work. His paintings often depicted one of two types of enchantress; the radiant enchantress and the fatal enchantress who were symbolically opposed to one another.
