About this artwork
This photograph documents a time in the 1960s when powerful cultural and economic forces were revolutionising working-class youth culture. In this photograph we are faced with the stare of children from the Gorbals (a working-class district of Glasgow). It is part of a 1964-5 series by McKenzie portraying the children of the area, which had been previously photographed in the late 1940s by photographers Bill Brandt and Bert Hardy.
