About this artwork
Known as ‘Robert des Ruines’, Hubert Robert specialised in veduta or view paintings, particularly caprices (fanciful images) based on the ruins of Ancient Rome. This is one of several versions of this composition, executed in Rome, where he worked and studied 1754-65. After his return to Paris Robert became involved in garden design and was one of the first curators of the national museum that became the Louvre.
