About this artwork
This harvest scene was sketched at Cambuskenneth, near Stirling. The line of women draws the eye into the distance, while rapid strokes of pastel suggest constant movement. Guthrie was a leading figure among the Glasgow Boys, a group of radical artists who painted contemporary rural life. They were strongly influenced by the realism of French painters such as Jules Bastien-Lepage and Jean-François Millet, who were popular with Scottish collectors.
