Robert Brough, 1872-1905. Artist
About this artwork
This portrait of Robert Brough was made by close friend and fellow Aberdeen artist, James Cadenhead. In this fine study, Cadenhead has emphasised his friend’s good looks and his reputation for always being immaculately dressed. Cadenhead was influenced by Whistler and Japanese art. In this work, like Whistler, he here Cadenhead uses a signature rather like the publisher’s seals seen on Japanese prints. Brough’s career was cut short when he died at the age of 33 in a train accident. Cadenhead was a pall bearer at his funeral.
