About this artwork

This Dumfriesshire landscape, painted shortly after Geissler began teaching at Perth Academy, shows the influence of his Paris studies under cubist artist André Lhote. Geissler’s draughtsmanship is meticulous; his subtle distortion of perspective and stylisation of line plays with space in a pseudo-cubist manner. Colour is subordinated to design, yet the white of the farmhouse breaks up the browns and greens of which the picture is largely composed. The artist uses stippled brushwork to describe textures, and the play of light, as on the conical roof.
