About this artwork
Norbertine Bresslern-Roth was an Austrian artist who took up the linocut in the 1920s. A renowned painter of animals, she translated this into a highly sophisticated and dynamic use of colour linocut. Although the technique is very similar to woodcut (substituting wood for linoleum blocks), the use of lino allowed artists a cheaper and more malleable surface to work with, using minimal and often home-made equipment. In this stylised image, a panther attacks a group of Gazelle.
