Isobel Wylie Hutchison

Arctic Landscape

About this artwork

Hutchison travelled extensively through Greenland, Iceland and Arctic Alaska. During her explorations she would not only film her experiences but she was a talented painter. Her books are illustrated with watercolours such as this. In 1936, Hutchison exhibited three watercolours of Greenland in the Royal Scottish Academy, of which this may be one. It shows a snowy scene with firewood stacked in a pile and footprints deep in the snow, perhaps Hutchison’s marking her route to where she stands making the sketch.
