From childhood Hanzlová has been fascinated by horses. For her the issue of how humans relate to them provides a potent theme to explore. Although these photographs concentrate only on parts of the horses’ bodies, we can imagine the whole beast as it eats, drinks and moves. Breaking with traditional photographic or pictorial representations, the photographs powerfully transmit the visceral qualities of the animal. The images gain this force and energy through proximity. Both highly original and a work in progress, this is the first showing of the series at exhibition.
