ARTIST ROOMS: Music from the Balconies – Ed Ruscha and Los Angeles
“Ruscha is a pop artist, a conceptual artist and a surrealist whose images portray the same sinister Hollywood you see in David Lynch films. In other words, a contemporary great”
The Guardian
Ed Ruscha (b.1937, Nebraska, USA) is widely regarded as one of the most significant artists working today. This two-room display has been selected from the substantial collection of Ruscha's work held in ARTIST ROOMS to explore the artist's fascination with West Coast American culture.
Including photographic series, paintings and drawings dating from the early 1960s to the 2000s, this display highlighted the ways in which Ruscha has consistently drawn upon urban landscape and architecture, cinema, brands, automobile-culture and language that refer and relate to Los Angeles and Hollywood to create works that engage with the aspirations and seduction of the American Dream. Ruscha’s unique style and coolly rendered images defy categorisation, melding the serial, gridded arrangements and repetition characteristic of Conceptual art with everyday subjects more commonly associated with Pop Art.
