In order to help protect the health of our staff and visitors during this difficult time, we have closed all of our Galleries.

Galleries & grounds

We will continue to allow public access through the grounds of the Modern Art galleries while the Galleries are closed. This arrangement will be kept under review as circumstances change. We are keen to allow the public to make appropriate use of these grounds but we ask that you strictly adhere to Government guidelines on social distancing at all times.

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is a must-see venue for modern and contemporary art. It comprises two galleries, one on either side of Belford Road, and a fantastic sculpture park.

The lawn at the front of Modern One was landscaped to a design by Charles Jencks.

Modern One 

Modern Two

Modern One is housed in a neoclassical building, which was designed by William Burn in 1825. Modern Two was originally built in 1833 was converted into a Gallery.

Getting here

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is located 15 minutes’ walk from Princes Street. It includes two buildings, Modern One and Modern Two, set in a beautiful sculpture park.

In addition to the transport options below there are bike racks at each site and Just Eat Cycle Hire stations nearby.

Gallery bus

The Gallery Bus is not in service while the galleries are temporarily closed

The Gallery bus shuttles visitors between the three gallery sites, for a voluntary donation of £1, starting and returning to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern Two).

Accessibility & facilities

The Changing Places toilet is located in the rear car park of Modern One with accessible parking spaces located nearby. The unit is open 9am-5pm, every day, a key is not required.
