The National Galleries of Scotland Foundation
The National Galleries of Scotland Foundation (the Foundation) was established in March 2012. The Foundation supports the important work of the National Galleries of Scotland and is an independent body for fundraising. All income generated by the Foundation is used to support the work of the Galleries. The Foundation is managed by a Board of Trustees which meets four times a year. The Trustees are:
Alex Callander (Chair)
Alex Callander MA FSIP joined the National Galleries of Scotland Foundation Board and was appointed Chair at its inception in March 2012. He retired from Baillie Gifford in 2012 after 30 years with the company, initially as a Fund Manager and then moving to Institutional Client Services and latterly as Joint Senior Partner. He was also Chairman of the Institute of Investment Management and Research from 1997-99. Alex studied mathematics at St John’s College in Cambridge and is now an archaeology masters student at the University of Edinburgh.
Nicola Catterall was appointed to the Board at its inception in March 2013. She is also a Trustee of the Dewar Arts Awards, sits on the Arts & Humanities Faculty Advisory Board of Durham University and is Chief Operating Officer the National Galleries of Scotland. She has over 30 years of senior operational and financial management experience including in premier financial services organisations. She worked in Edinburgh in senior management roles for the Standard Life Group for 8 years, and prior to this, worked in London for 14 years for the Global Investment Banking Group, J.P. Morgan. Nicola is an E & Y qualified Chartered Accountant and member of ICAEW, with a strong audit background and experience in Finance, Control, Risk and Compliance disciplines. She graduated from the University of Durham in 1980 with a BA Joint Honours, Double First in Philosophy and Politics.
A graduate in Economics and Political Science from Trinity College, Dublin, James is Chairman of Value and Income Trust plc, the Monks Investment Trust plc, The Scottish Oriental Smaller Companies plc, Northern 3 VCT plc and Edinburgh US Tracker Trust plc. He is also a Director of the Independent Investment Trust plc, Audax Properties plc and Amati, and a Trustee of Lloyds TSB Foundation. He is a Governor and Trustee of the Gordonstoun Foundation, as well as Chairman of the Investment Committee for National Trust for Scotland and Penicuik House Preservation Fund, and a trustee of the National Museums for Scotland Charitable Trust.
Ray Macfarlane was appointed to the Board at its inception in March 2012. She graduated MA, LLB, MBA from the University of Glasgow and began her career as a solicitor in private practice. She held senior management posts in HBOS plc and Scottish Enterprise before taking up a non-executive career in 2008. A former Chairman of Scottish Screen and Deputy Chairman of the Scottish Arts Council, she is now a Member of the Scottish Legal Aid Board, a Trustee with the Energy Saving Trust and Chairman of both Home Scotland and the Recognition Committee of Museums Galleries Scotland. Ray is Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Galleries of Scotland.
Magnus Swanson was appointed to the board in August 2013. He is Chairman of Law at Work Limited, a fast growing provider of employment and health and safety services, and Golden Charter Limited, which is the UK's leading supplier of pre-paid funeral plans. Before he took on those roles he was a partner in Maclay,Murray& Spens for 25 years. Magnus was a leading corporate lawyer and progressed into a management role with the firm, latterly serving as CEO. Magnus is also a member of the Investment Committee of the National Trust for Scotland and a director of Nairn Improvement Community Enterprise which is a charity concerned with improving and furthering the interests of the town of Nairn.
