The Monarch of the Glen

In 2017 the National Galleries of Scotland was able to aquire The Monarch of the Glen by Sir Edwin Landseer for the nation. The painting had been in private and corporate collections since 1851.

Thank you for your support which ensured that this magnificent work will be enjoyed by millions of people for generations to come. The acquisition was made possible thanks to a part gift from Diageo Scotland Ltd, with contributions from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Dunard Fund, the Art Fund, the William Jacob Bequest, the Tam O’ Shanter Trust, the Turtleton Trust, the K.T.Wiedemann Foundation, Inc. and the public.

The Portrait Gallery project

Portrait of the Nation was our project to transform the Scottish National Portrait Gallery to create a fantastic new home for the gallery's outstanding collection. Our campaigns focused on the artistic features of the Great Hall including our 'Gallery of the Stars' and the chance to 'Take Your Place in History'.

Our 'Gallery of the Stars' involved selecting a unique star from the 30 panels which sit above the Great Hall.

'Take Your Place in History' donors were invited to adopt one of the great men and women from Scottish history represented in the processional frieze along the balcony of the Great Hall.

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) Diana and Actaeon 1556 - 1559

Titian

The National Galleries of Scotland and the National Gallery, London, formed a partnership in 2008 to acquire Titian’s Diana and Actaeon from the Duke of Sutherland. The work was acquired for the nation following generous contributions from public and private donors. As well as bringing this extraordinary painting into public ownership, this also ensured that the rest of the Bridgewater Collection remained on loan to the National Galleries of Scotland. In 2012 Titian’s Diana and Callisto was also secured. This acquisition meant that the pair could remain together in Britain for the enjoyment of the public in perpetuity.

We are immensely grateful to all the individuals and trusts whose generous charitable support made these acquisitions possible.
