Before Andy Warhol rose to fame as an artist, he was an illustrator by trade. His illustrations were ubiquitous in magazines in the 1950s. In many of his illustrations, including those on this deck of cards, he used a blotted line technique. He applied abundant ink to the paper and then blotted it while it was still wet, producing a delicate and beautiful line with small imperfections. This technique can be seen as a type of print making, and is the forerunner of the silkscreens for which he is renowned.
