A5 (14.8 x 21 cm) single postcard featuring The Piazzetta, Venice by Joseph Mallord William Turner, part of the National Galleries of Scotland Collection.

Turner immersed himself in the study of Venice during three short visits in 1819, 1833 and 1840. This remarkable work records a dramatic summer storm above the Piazzetta, the political and ceremonial heart of Venice. At the left is the Libreria Marciana, with the columns bearing statues of St Theodore and the lion of St Mark in the foreground, and the Doge’s Palace beyond.

Joseph Mallord William Turner (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851), known as J. M. W. Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker, and watercolourist, known for his brilliant, expressive colourisation, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings.
