A5 (21 x 14.8 cm) single postcard featuring Bathers by Paul Cézanne, part of the National Galleries of Scotland collection.

Cézanne made this lithograph for the art dealer Ambroise Vollard, who wanted to include it in his limited-edition album La Deuxième Année de l'Album d’Estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard, published in 1897.

Cézanne had been fascinated by the theme of bathers for some time before he made this lithograph and was developing his series of large-scale paintings on the theme. He was uncomfortable painting nudes from life so often looked to precedents in the work of painters from the past such as Rubens and Titian.

Paul Cézanne (19 January 1839 – 22 October 1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavour to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century.
