Woman of the North Sea limited edition print portfolio, completed in 2002, contains six etchings by John Bellany accompanied by poems written by George Bruce in response to Bellany's images, printed at Edinburgh Printmakers.

Throughout his long life, the poet George Bruce (1909-2002) had a strong affinity with the visual arts and artists. A former BBC arts producer and critic for The Sunday Times, he wrote on painting and sculpture and on many artists including Anne Redpath, Robin Philipson and James Cumming.

In his final years, as well as producing Through the Letterbox with Dame Elizabeth Blackadder, George Bruce also worked with his friend, the artist, John Bellany, on two special projects relating poems to etchings. Though of different generations, Bellany and Bruce shared a common background – the fishing communities of the North Sea.

John Bellany (1942-2013) was born in the fishing village of Port Seton. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and whilst a student he famously exhibited his artworks on the railings of the National Gallery of Scotland on the Mound. A major retrospective of his work was organised by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2012.

George Bruce (10 March 1909 – 25 July 2002) was a Scottish poet and radio journalist. He was a BBC producer at Aberdeen (1946-1956) and Edinburgh (1956-1970). He co-produced the radio programmes Scottish Art and Letters and Arts Review. His book Pursuit won the Saltire Society award (1999) for Scottish Book of the Year. His portrait (oil on panel, by Colin Dunbar, 1970) is in the collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
