Le Chat Noir was the first modern caberet. It opened in 1881 in Montmartre, Paris. Performers such as Jane Avril, Claude Debussy, and Erik Satie often performed there, and it attracted a colourful crowd of patrons.
Theophile Steinlen was an artist who frequented Montmartre, and a contemporary and sometime collaborator of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He is best known for this iconic poster advertising the Chat Noir caberet.
