Icarus is a page from the limited edition art book titled ‘Jazz’ commissioned in 1942 by art publisher Tériade. This book contains colourful paper cuts collages and accompanied by the artist’s written thoughts. Icarus is from Greek mythology where he and his father attempted to escape from Crete by means of wings constructed from feathers and wax. Icarus ignored his father's instructions not to fly too close to the sun. His wings melted he tumbled out of the sky and fell into the sea where he drowned.
Henri-Émile-Benoît Matisse was a French artist, known for both his use of colour and draughtsmanship. Matisse is commonly regarded as one of the 20th Century artists responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. His artworks can be seen in major collection worldwide.
