The Company of Women is part of a series of works that reimagine episodes from the 19th Century novel The Crime of the Father Amaro. Well known in Portugal the book tell s of a love affair between a priest and a young woman. This painting recounts Amaro’s childhood memory of being pampered by the family maids, but Amaro is no child in Rego’s version.
Dame Paula Rego is a Portuguese-born visual artist who is particularly known for her paintings and prints based on storybooks.
