This is the portrait of Gertrude Vernon (1864-1932), commissioned by Lady Agnew’s husband, Andrew Noel Agnew, who was a barrister and barony of Lochnaw in Galloway. The popularity of the painting made Sargent become recognised and on demand as a portrait painter and brought Lady Agnew some reputation as a society beauty.
