Laissez Faire Charles Avery Exclusive Limited Edition Print
Exclusive limited edition print to National Galleries of Scotland
Laissez Faire, CHARLES AVERY b.1973 GMA 5130
Colour offset-lithograph on paper. Signed and numbered limited edition of 100. Unframed and unmounted.
The Scottish artist Charles Avery is one of the most interesting contemporary artists, with a considerable international reputation.
Following his hugely popular exhibition The Islanders at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2008, he has shown at leading public galleries including the Boijmans Museum, Rotterdam, Tate Britain and the Hayward Gallery, London, and has shows in 2010 in Italy, France and Germany.
Specially commissioned for the Gallery of Modern Art’s 50th anniversary, the artist has generously agreed to make a limited edition print available to Gallery visitors and friends.
Laissez Faire illustrates a scene from Avery’s imaginary "Island", a mythical place of philosophical inquiry and narrative invention. Avery illustrates the red-light district of his island, showing an "empiricist" philosopher being taunted to "experience something new". With wit and skill, Laissez-Faire bears witness to Avery’s masterful draughtsmanship and sense of humour.
