KEEPERS, The Ancient Offices of Britain

Alastair Bruce, Julian Calder, Mark Cator

We are delighted to be able to offer the new edition of the classic book Keepers, featuring the cover image "Queen of Scots, Sovereign of The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of The Thistle and Chief of The Chiefs". The Scottish National Portrait Gallery now owns this photograph of Her Majesty.

Alastair Bruce’s impeccably researched narrative traces the history of Britain through its ancient offices from before the Norman Conquest, through the Reformation and Age of Empire to the present day. Each office holder is beautifully photographed by Julian Calder and Mark Cator.

Keepers contains over 100 photographs, of which 45 are new and specially commissioned. These include:

  • Her Majesty the Queen as Knight of the Thistle, photographed on location
  • A Diamond Jubilee portrait of Her Majesty in her study at Balmoral
  • Baron of the Bachuil, Keeper of the Bachuil
  • Bailie of the Abbey Court of Holyrood
  • Lord Lyon King of Arms
  • Heriditary Captain of Dunstaffnage
  • Master of Bruce
  • Chief of Clan Cameron
