Jane Avril Toulouse-Lautrec Scarf

Very fine quality wool and silk blended scarf featuring Toulouse-Lautrec's famous image of Jane Avril, 1899.

Jane Avril was one of Toulouse-Lautrec's favourite models. She performed at the Moulin Rouge and the Folies-Bergere, among other venues. She suffered from a nervous disorder later diagnosed as St Vitus's dance, which caused her to make involuntary jerks and spasms, which she later incoprorated into her dancing as her trademark.

This image was Lautrec's last depiction of Avril and the penultimate poster of his career. Showing Avril in an extravagant hat and long dress decorated with a snake motif, the poster appears to have been inspired by an earlier publicity photograph by Paul Sescau.
