Artichoke Mabel Royds Silk Scarf

Silk Scarf exclusive to the National Galleries of Scotland

This scarf is inspired on a detail from Artichoke, about 1938, colour woodcut on paper from a series of flower prints by Mabel Royds (1874-1941), part of the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art Collection, GMA 525

Between 1933 and 1938, Royds made a series of flower prints. ‘Artichoke’ is an example of her bold woodcut technique combined with a vibrant colour scheme - the softness of the feathery purple flower contrasting with the hard lines of the thorny green leaves and stem. Although Royds travelled extensively, she always enjoyed depicting the simple things that she encountered in everyday life
