Alberta is inspired by Create Dangerously: the immigrant artist at work (2010) written by Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat (born 1969). Danticat writes that, ‘There are many possible interpretations of what it means to create dangerously … it is creating as a revolt against silence, creating when both the creation and the reception, the writing and the reading, are dangerous undertakings…’ Danticat acknowledges the lecture ‘Create Dangerously’ (1957) by French-Algerian author Albert Camus (1913-1960).

Alberta was born in 1980 in Bridgetown, Barbados, and she lives and works in Glasgow. After studying tapestry at Edinburgh College of Art, she completed a Masters degree at Glasgow School of Art. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Edinburgh, and Research Associate at The University of Johannesburg in South Africa. In 2022 Alberta represented Scotland at the international festival of the 59th Venice Biennale, commissioned by the Scotland+Venice partnership.
