John Bellany (1942-2013) was born in Port Seton, a fishing village near Edinburgh. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. The dark themes on his large scale early paintings are contrasting with a more optimistic mood reflected in more vibrant colours in his late paintings from 1988, when he underwent a liver transplant operation after becoming seriously ill in the 1980s.
