Propped by Jenny Saville medium t-shirt
Medium size 100% white cotton t-shirt featuring Propped, 1992, by Jenny Saville. Fair Wear Foundation produced.
Propped depicts a woman balanced precariously on a stool, regarding the viewer with a challenge in her eyes. There is a quote from an essay by Luce Irigaray, the feminist theorist, written in mirror writing across the painting: "If we continue to speak in this sameness - speak as men have spoken for centuries, we will fail each other. Again words will pass through our bodies, above our heads - disappear, make us disappear..."
This painting is an important one in Jenny Saville's oeuvre, as early on in her career she was grappling with important questions of feminism, femininity, and attempting to reconcile her feminist ideas with her need to paint large female nudes.
Jenny Saville RA (born 7 May 1970) is a contemporary British painter associated with the Young British Artists. She is known for her large-scale painted depictions of nude women. Saville’s monumental self-portrait, Propped, previously exhibited at the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art Summer 2018, sold for £9.5 million. Breaking the auction record for a living female artist.
