You get me? by Mahtab Hussain (hardback)
You Get Me? is a photography book by British artist Mahtab Hussain that documents with a large number of portraits photographed over a nine-year period, the experiences of young working-class South Asian Muslim men in contemporary Britain and their local environments, picking up on manifest signs of multi-cultural identity.
Mahtab Hussain work was featured in Counted | Scotland's Census 2022 on display at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
The photographs in You Get Me? are interspersed with extracts from Hussain’s conversations with Muslim men, principally in London, Nottingham and Birmingham. Bringing issues of identity, masculinity, displacement and belonging to the fore, the book addresses concrete experiences of these men against a backdrop of derogatory media representations. Confronting the politics surrounding immigration and identity in Britain, Hussain at once celebrates the implicit agency of his photographic subjects, while recognising their struggle to determine a sense of self.
British artist Mahtab Hussain explores the important relationship between identity, heritage and displacement. His themes develop through long-term research articulating a visual language that challenges the prevailing concepts of multiculturalism. Hussain was selected as the 2015 Light Work + Autograph ABP Artist-in-Residence and was chosen from 500 international artists to be ‘discovery artist’ under the prestigious Discoveries Award in 2016 at Houston FotoFest.
