Special limited edition book of poems inspired by the paintings of Scottish artist Victoria Crowe. All copies are signed and numbered by Victoria Crowe.

Victoria Crowe is one of our finest living artists, and this little book is published to mark her wonderful retrospective exhibition at Edinburgh’s City Art Centre titled Victoria Crowe: 50 Years of Painting. Features poems by Gillian Allnutt, Peter Davidson, Christine de Luca, Estella Gray, Susan Mansfield and Alan Spence.

It seemed fitting that alongside the monographs, the essays – the critical appreciation of her work – there should be this creative response from poets. Victoria herself has been called a painter-poet and the very titles of her paintings show this, offering a way in, enhancing the direct experience of the work. They are like little poems in themselves, haiku-like in their compactness, their power to suggest.

Inspiration is a word little used these days. But all of the poets featured here have been inspired by Victoria’s work. Like all great art, what it communicates is the consciousness of the artist. This is work of true inwardness, profound spirituality – qualities that have been hard won over a lifetime. To walk through the exhibition, ascending as you go, is a rich and moving experience, a journey into the light. These poems are a response and an offering, with gratitude.
