In O Vinho (wine), Paula Rego is inspired by a short story by the Portuguese novelist Joao de Melo. This story is translated into English for the first time, presents a lead character that explores the ‘unique and delicious secrets of wine’, understood not just as an enjoyment but as an enlightenment that brings freedom and a fresh view to his monotonous existence as an office worker.
Illustrated with a sequence of nine images reproducing lithographs by Rego, each one a story, and all indicative of the transforming effects of the colour, the soul, the profound essence of wine.
Dame Paula Rego is a Portuguese-born (b. 1935) and best-loved woman visual artist who is particularly known for her paintings and prints based on storybooks.
