Karla Black + Kishio Suga: A New Order (paperback)
This illustrated art book beautifully presents the exhibition A New Order, which brings together for the first time the work of artists Karla Black and Kishio Suga.
Although the two live and work on opposite sides of the world, and were unaware of each other’s art until this exhibition was conceived, they are united by their use of everyday materials to create sculptural works of sublime beauty, complexity and originality, which they make in response to specific spaces. Karla Black + Kishio Suga: A New Order is also Suga’s first major showing in the UK.
One of the most thought-provoking and original artists working anywhere in the world today, Suga has re-created some of his most celebrated ‘situations’ – site-specific sculptural arrangements – and has made an entirely new piece conceived especially for the exhibition.
Karla Black, one of the country’s leading contemporary artists, is renowned for her abstract sculptures which are often composed of delicate and ephemeral materials. For A New Order she presents new sculptures made in materials including cotton wool, paint, ribbon, cellophane, polythene and eyeshadow, most of which – because of the scale and materials involved – the artist made directly within the rooms of the Gallery.
An interview with Karla Black and an essay by Kishio Suga offer a deeper insight into the artists’ work and the ideas behind this exhibition. Artist biographies and a curatorial introduction further complement the extensive photography of these transient artworks and form an invaluable record of the show.
