Scottish National Gallery Research Library

The Scottish National Gallery Research Library covers the period roughly from 1300 to 1900, reflecting the Scottish National Gallery's art collection.

This library holds approximately 50,000 volumes of monographs, catalogues raisonnés, exhibition and sales catalogues, public and private collection catalogues, journals, photographs, slides, board minutes, as well as information files for each painting and sculpture in the permanent collection.

Opening hours

Usual opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10am-12.30pm and 2pm-4.30pm by appointment only.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to make an appointment with the librarian at least a week in advance to ensure staff and space availability.

The Scottish National Gallery Research Library will be closed from 30th August 2016 due to a major transformational project. Part of this project will be a reconfiguration of our libraries and print rooms. The Collection will be accessible to the public again from Spring 2017.
