'Snail Jesus' came to being as the natural centrepiece for the Snail Wall, a lockdown project undertaken by Cruickshank and her flatmate to adorn their living room wall with images of snails. Using a variety of media, from embroidery to tinted window decals, creating the Snail Wall brought a simple joy to a strange year spent indoors. Inspired by her study of medieval art, Cruickshank has replaced the figure of Christ in gilded icons with the common garden snail, elevating Snail Jesus' status to ‘King of the Bugs, God of the Snail Wall’.
