A Portrait of a young woman

Alexandra Gow (Visitor Assistant)

Graphite pencil on paper

This work depicts my friend of 10 years, Samantha, who is one of the biggest inspirations in my life. Samantha works as a Judicial Assistant for the Royal Courts of Justice and is about to begin training to become a barrister. As a young Bengali woman forging a career in public law, she has faced many obstacles, but her passion, resilience and intellect has taken her far. For me, portraiture is an act of care and a means of honouring the people I love. I use graphite pencils to create considered drawings that capture how much they mean to me.
