Clouds resembling familiar shapes seem to be looming in the distance in this painting. A female torso, a tuba, and a chair, set in a seaside background - what could it mean? Whether perceived as fearful, peaceful, or erotic, the scene depicted could be reminiscent of real life and yet, also unrealistic. René Magritte’s juxtaposition of everyday objects and shapes with unexpected situations renders our reading of his work as surreal. His regular exploration of words, objects, their place, and their meanings led to his iconic place within visual culture and his designation as a Surrealist.
