Sheena Smith, Friends volunteer for 2.5 years

'I work full-time for an Investment company, and volunteer for the National Galleries of Scotland in my spare time. I joined after becoming a Friend of the Galleries, as a great way to give something back.

I have no formal background in art (having done my degree in Business & IT), other than a love of creating anything that springs to mind, drawing, painting, and of course, the peacefulness and inspiration that comes from visiting wonderful galleries.

My first love, from a young age, has been sketching, especially animals. When I paint, I use acrylics, and it tends to be more abstract about how I’m feeling at that moment.

Since I started volunteering, I’ve been sketching more, and even started looking at sketching software, trying out modern techniques.

Whilst volunteering for the Galleries, I have met a great group of people, from all backgrounds and experiences. I continue to learn from them, and really love meeting curators and lecturers to help organise events for other people to enjoy and learn from.'
