Welwitschia Mirabilis and the Tragic Mask

Marissa Stoffer, Gallery Attendant for 2 years

'I graduated from the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art with an MA Fine Art in 2014, specialising in painting, but I also work in sculpture and animation. Participating in a number of exhibitions and residencies, I recently received the Edinburgh Visual Art Makers Award to develop my practice in Peru’s Amazon jungle. Natural landscapes are a consistent feature of my work – modified, abstracted and combined with significant and often other-worldly objects, shapes, textures, and colours.

I love working for the National Galleries of Scotland with such a diverse range of people. As a member of shift security team, I sometimes have the luxury of spending time alone in a gallery out-of-hours. I work across different galleries, I witness exhibitions being put together, and occasionally I meet the artists themselves.

I have always loved surrealism and being exposed to the works of Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy and Joan Miro on a regular basis is inspiring. When I work at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, I always feel motivated to make art, and often, on my breaks, I will paint in my sketchbook.'
