Our Banner in the Sky, 1861

Frederic Edwin Church

Church painted this highly symbolic landscape shortly after the onset of the American Civil War. A barren tree acts as a flagpole to the ‘Stars and Stripes’ in which the North Star shines through a patch of blue sky. In this image, Church links the American landscape to the northern ‘Union’ cause.
