About

★★★★★ “One of the UK's greatest living painters”
The List

This extensive exhibition, which takes over both floors of the Royal Scottish Academy, is the first museum survey of Bridget Riley’s work to be held in the UK for 16 years, and the largest exhibition of her work to be shown in Scotland. Spanning over 70 years of work, it focuses on the origins of Riley’s practice and traces pivotal moments across her acclaimed career. It features very early paintings and drawings, many of which are being exhibited for the first time, iconic black-and-white paintings of the 1960s, Riley’s expansive explorations into colour, wall paintings and works made this year, as well as studies that reveal Riley’s working methods.

Please note that the upper level of this exhibition will not open until 10.30am on Sunday 15 September.

★★★★ “Britain’s greatest abstract painter – some might say our greatest living artist period”
The Telegraph

Internationally-acclaimed artist Bridget Riley creates dazzling and compelling abstract paintings which explore the fundamental nature of perception. Through her observations of the natural world, her experience of looking at the work of other artists, and through her own experimentation, Riley has made a deep, personal investigation of the act of painting, and of how we see. She is one of the most distinguished and world-renowned artists working today.

The exhibition is organised by the National Galleries of Scotland in close collaboration with the artist, and is presented in partnership with Hayward Gallery, London, where it will be on show from 23 October 2019 until 26 January 2020.
