Scottish National Gallery Hawthornden Lecture Theatre

In 1901, the art collector Henry Vaughan bequeathed 38 watercolours by Joseph Mallord William Turner to the Scottish National Gallery on the condition that they be exhibited to the public every year, but only in the month of January to help preserve their spectacular colour and vibrancy. Spanning Turner’s long and distinguished career, these atmospheric paintings provide visions of the natural world, from waterfalls and seascapes to mountaintops enveloped by cloud, and from ethereal piazzas to perspectives of the Italian Riviera. Charlotte Topsfield, Senior Curator of British Drawings and Prints, will share her expert insights into these much-loved treasures, and her lecture will be followed by a private viewing of this year’s exhibition.
