Frances Fowle, Senior Curator, European & Scottish Art & Portraiture, provides a curator’s insight into this year’s summer show and discusses the key role played by Scottish collectors in the early reception of Impressionism. In particular the talk will examine the role played both by art dealers, such as Alex Reid and David Croal Thomson, and by pioneering women collectors whose French pictures eventually found their way to the Scottish National Gallery. These included the newspaper editor and ‘first lady of Fleet Street’ Rachel Beer, the flamboyant beauty Evelyn St Croix Fleming, the champion yachtsman Elizabeth Workman and the talented musician Rosalind Maitland.
