SSHoP Annual Photographer's Lecture 2019: Garry Fabian Miller

Scottish National Gallery Hawthornden Lecture Theatre
  • Friday 15 November, 6:00-7:00pm

After 45 years, the artist Garry Fabian Miller enters the final seasons of picture-making in his darkroom. Across the world, these unique spaces are reaching the end of their natural life as photography evolves and adapts in new ways. Fabian Miller is making his last pictures seeking ‘a glorious resolution to this miraculous medium and its colour world.’ In the lecture he will reflect on the magic of photography, and the symbiotic relationship of experience of the landscape and then exposures remade within the darkroom.

All Fabian Miller’s pictures since 1984 have been made directly with light and chemistry onto the paper’s surface - the camera long abandoned, as will the darkroom be in the near future.

The lecture coincides with the artist’s solo exhibition Midwinter Blaze at Ingleby, 33 Barony Street, Edinburgh (12 October-20 December 2019) and the publication of a new book, BLAZE, which is introduced by Edmund de Waal and includes new poetry by Alice Oswald.
