About

In this talk Dr Vanessa Tothill, Assistant Curator East Asia Collections Review (National Museums Scotland) will consider artist sketchbooks in the National Galleries of Scotland collection containing miniature ink drawings to introduce some of the popular narratives that are frequently depicted in Japanese art. These scaled-down studies of well-known Japanese works of art demonstrate how artists at painting schools developed their technical skills and understanding of classic pictorial modes through copying models. The notebooks reveal the concentrated effort and regular practice of nineteenth-century Japanese painters honing their craft.
