A Woman in Bed has the peculiar honour of having been thought to represent all three women in Rembrandt'۪s life; his wife, Saskia, his son'۪s nursemaid Geertje Dircx, and the servant girl Hendrickje Stoffels. Dr Tico Seifert, curator of Rembrandt | Britain'۪s Discovery of the Master, will take a fresh look at these identifications, interpreting recent technical examinations of the painting, shedding new light on the original structure and function of this highly illusionistic and enigmatic work. Finally, he will highlight the picture'۪s history in Britain since its arrival in the 18th century.
