About

This is the online streamed version of the live event.

Painted in June 1889, Olive Trees by Vincent van Gogh is one of a series of 15 paintings tackling this distinctive motif and produced during the artist’s year-long stay at the asylum of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.  Over the last three years an international team of curators, conservators and conservation scientists has examined each painting of the series in detail. Analysing all aspects of van Gogh’s materials and technique, this ground-breaking project culminated in an exhibition that took place in the Dallas Museum of Art, Texas and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam in 2021–2022.  Senior Paintings Conservator, Lesley Stevenson will discuss the findings of the research specifically in relation to the Edinburgh Olive Trees – one of the most popular paintings in the Scottish National Gallery collection.
