A New Era: Students of Hospitalfield

For much of the 20th century, the four Scottish art schools sent their most promising students to Hospitalfield in Arbroath for the summer. Living in the turreted sandstone manor house of Hospitalfield, the ancestral home of the Fraser family, this community of young artists studied, exchanged ideas and found inspiration in the surrounding landscape. Drawing from her new book, Students of Hospitalfield: Education and Inspiration in 20th-Century Scottish Art, Dr Peggy Beardmore will share how formative experiences at Hospitalfield inspired works which feature in the exhibition, A New Era: Scottish Modern Art 1900-1950, by artists such as James Cowie, Robert Henderson Blyth, Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde and Alexander Allan. She will also trace the fascinating connections between the artists and reveal some of the personalities behind the art. The talk will be followed by a book signing.
